Synopsis: Spain, 1937. Ramón Mercader, a young communist combatant, is recruited and trained by the Soviet intelligence service to participate in a top-secret mission ordered by the ruthless dictator Joseph Stalin: the assassination of his former political rival, Leon Trotsky, who is living in exile in Mexico…El Elegido is a historical drama
ABOUT THE MUSIC: The music for The Chosen is always evolving as its main character does. Starting with an operatic big orchestral sound, the main theme is being deconstructed to end up as a sad piano melody, representing Ramon Mercader’s loneliness and fear. The score is a mix of melodic themes with some textural passages that help to set the dramatic and historical tone of this true story.
“The composer signs a creation that is structured around a notable main theme that is initially linked to his commitment. But in his successive transformations, a dramatic tone is incorporated that brings him closer to the main character, to whom the music is finally attributed, which ends up exposing not his strength and determination but practically his condition more as a victim than as an executioner. Other music applied to the environments of tension and danger form a cloud that generates certain toxicity in the environment, affecting the meaning of the main theme and of the melodies (the theme of love, for example) that try without success to avoid the abyss as well emotional to which music finally leads” MundoBSO
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE: The music was conducted by David Hernando, recorded with the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, and mixed by Marc Blanes at BSO Superestudio, Barcelona.
